PEARL HARBOR, the United States, July 7 (ChinaMil) -- The press conference for the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2016 Exercise was held in Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, the United States, on July 5, local time, and the commanding officers of the participating countries attended the conference.
The press conference began with the United States Pacific Fleet Commander Admiral Scott Swift giving a brief introduction to this exercise. He said that the RIMPAC exercise is the largest multinational joint military exercise in the world, and the participation by 26 countries also makes the RIMPAC 2016 more powerful.
He also put forward the three elements of the theme of this year's exercise - inclusiveness, continuity and place.
"The exercise is a grand gathering for world navies and helps boost the friendship among participating nations," said Wang Sheqiang, commanding officer of the Chinese participating taskforce.
He said that China's participation in this exercise helps enhance exchange and pragmatic cooperation between the Chinese navy and navies of other participating countries, and is also conducive to pushing forward the healthy and stable development of a new type of China-U.S. military relations.
Commander of the United States Third Fleet Vice Admiral Nora Tyson, who is also commander in chief of the RIMPAC 2016 Exercise, expressed her welcome to China's participation in this year's RIMPAC exercise, saying that connections and mutual trust established between the Chinese and the American militaries, as well as militaries of more participating countries, is of vital importance for ensuring security of sea routes and oceans.
Participation in the RIMPAC exercise facilitates the Chinese navy to beef up its capability of responding to threats in non-traditional security areas, so as to maintain and promote peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region, Wang said.
