ZHOUSHAN, December 23 (ChinaMil) -- A simple and grand ceremony marking the commissioning of the guided missile destroyer Ji'nan to the East China Sea Fleet of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) was held at a naval port in Zhoushan of east China's Zhejiang province on the morning of December 22, 2014.

The newly-commissioned guided missile destroyer Ji'nan, together with the guided missile destroyer Changchun and Zhengzhou, are all new-generation guided missile destroyers independently developed by China.

The guided missile destroyer Ji'nan (hull number 152), is equipped with multiple sets of home-made new-type weapons. It is able to attack surface warships and submarines independently or in coordination with other strength of the PLAN. The ship also possesses strong capabilities of conducting long-distance early-warning and detecting as well as regional air-defense operation.

The three generations of warships which inherit the name of Ji'nan witness the constant development of the PLAN.

It is learned that the warship naming methods by the navies of various countries are different, and it is a general practice for the navies of many countries to name the newly commissioned warship after the historically-famous decommissioned warship.

The first Ji'nan battleship, captured by the PLA in the campaign of crossing the Yangtze River from April 20 to 21, 1949, in the civil war between the militaries of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the then ruling party Kuomintang (KMT), was a coast defense warship seized by the KMT's navy from the surrendered Japanese invading troops in Shanghai after China's victory in the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression from 1937 to 1945. The warship was named Ji'nan in March 1950 and was sunk as a target ship in October 1975.

The second warship Ji'nan was the first ship of the first-generation destroyers designed and made by China independently. It started service in the Chinese navy in December 1971 and has been displayed in the Qingdao Navy Museum as an exhibit since its decommissioning in November 2007. The second Ji'nan ship carried out over 1,400 equipment tests, which laid the foundation for China’s building of large surface warships.
