BEIJING, January 16 (ChinaMil) -- Chang Wanquan, member of the Central Military Commission (CMC), defense minister of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and state councilor, recently inspected Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps.
The website of Ministry of National Defense reported on January 11 that “Chang Wanquan spent 18 days and conducted three times of special investigations in Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps since last September.” This means that from September 2014, Chang Wanquan conducted three investigations in less than four months in Xinjiang.
Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), Chang Wanquan went to Xinjiang for four times. In middle October of 2013, Chang Wanquan inspected the border defense work and national defense mobilization work in Xinjiang.
Sources said that during his visit in 2013, Chang Wanquan investigated the militia emergency elements, militia posts and militia training bases.
Regarding the reasons behind the defense minister’s dense visits to Xinjiang, Professor Gong Fangbin of the National Defense University (NDU) said that the Party and the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) have always attached great importance to the Xinjiang region. And Xinjiang becomes more important as new terrorism trends emerged.
“If the enemy moves, we shall move and if they stay where they are, we shall stay too. Currently, terrorist is the enemy,” said Gong Fangbin.
At present, we rely on two forces to counter terrorism, the public security force (police) and the armed police force. The PLA, as China’s national security force, shall safeguard national security as well as internal political stability. “But from a strategic point of view, the military strength has an important role in countering terrorists,” said Gong Fangbin.
Defense Ministry spokesman Geng Yansheng previously responded that terrorism is the common enemy of mankind. The Chinese armed forces shoulder the responsibility to fight against terrorism. And the PLA will do a good counter-terrorism job based on the deployment of the nation.
In the CMC leadership level, in addition to Chang Wanquan’s intensive visits to Xinjiang, Xi Jinping, chairman of CMC, visited Xinjiang from April 27 to April 30, 2014. In July 2014, Xu Qiliang, vice chairman of CMC visited the Xinjiang Military Area Command (MAC). In July 2013, Fan Changlong, vice chairman of CMC, inspected the armed forces in Xinjiang.
During his inspection in Xinjiang, Xi Jinping said that “we shall use an iron wrist as swift as thunder to launch devastating strikes against terrorists. We shall resolutely curb the arrogance of terrorists. We shall deter our enemies and inspire our people.”
Gong Fangbin said that visits paid by Xi Jinping and other leaders of CMC indicated that the national armed forces can complete any task at any time.
Gong Fangbin analyzed that intense terrorism was seen in Tibet and Xinjiang regions in recent years. Terrorism in Tibet is less hostile compared with that in Xinjiang. Terrorists in Xinjiang brainwashed some people, which caused great dangers. Chinese government is determined to wipe out terrorism in these regions.
