PLA chief of general staff meets Portuguese counterpart

BEIJING, November 18 (ChinaMil) -- General Fang Fenghui, chief of general staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), met with Chief of the General Staff of the Portuguese Armed Forces Artur Neves Pina Monteiro in Beijing on November 17, 2015.

Fang Fenghui said there has been healthy development of bilateral friendly cooperative relations since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Portugal 36 years ago. In May 2014, President Xi Jinping and President Silva reached important consensus on further developing bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership. Thus, the bilateral relations have entered a mature, stable and vibrant period and this is the best period in history, Fang added.

Fang also pointed out that the steady development of military relations between China and Portugal in recent years also provides great potential for deepening pragmatic cooperation, saying that China is willing to work with the Portuguese side to implement the important consensus of the two leaders and plan for military cooperation in the future.

Fang stressed that China and Portugal shall continue to maintain high-level exchanges and conduct in-depth exchanges in joint training, humanitarian rescue, international peacekeeping, anti-terrorism and other fields.

The two side shall also work together to strengthen personnel training, warship mutual visits and other fields of professional cooperation to push forward the continuous development of bilateral military relations, Fang added.

Monteiro said that since the establishment of diplomatic ties, the two countries and two militaries have maintained a good friendship and pragmatic cooperation. Portugal views his visit as an important symbol to deepen bilateral military relations.

He said that Portugal is willing to work with China to implement the consensus reached by the two leaders, strengthen pragmatic cooperation in personnel training, international peacekeeping, anti-terrorism and other fields, in order to enhance the level of bilateral military relations.

It is learnt that Fang Fenghui held a welcome ceremony for Monteiro before the talks and accompanied him to review the guards of honor of the three services of the Chinese PLA. Portuguese ambassador to Beijing Pereira also attended the above events.
