PADANG, Indonesia, April 14 (ChinaMil) -- The 15th Western Pacific Naval Symposium (WPNS), hosted by the Indonesian Navy, commenced in Padang, Indonesia on April 13, 2016.
The leaders and representatives from navies of twenty-one member states, four observer states, and two observer state applicants attended the biennial conference themed "Developing maritime partnership and safeguarding regional stability in the West Pacific".
Vice Admiral Yuan Yubai, commander of the PLA North China Sea Fleet and representative of the Chinese Navy to the 15th WPNS, reviewed the 14th symposium held in Qingdao in April 2014. He said that the influence of the WPNS has long been beyond the West Pacific region, and with the joint efforts of the member states, the WPNS will definitely make bigger contributions to security, peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region.
The Chinese Navy is willing to take an active part in the activities of the WPNS and make contributions to its development in the manner of being more open, pragmatic and cooperative.
Founded in 1987, the WPNS aims to promote pragmatic cooperation among navies of the member states, enhance understanding and mutual trust, and jointly maintain regional maritime security.
