CTF commander visits 23rd Chinese naval escort taskforce

DJIBOUTI, May 19 (ChinaMil) -- Rear Admiral Ken Cheong Kwok Chien of the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN), who is commander of the U.S.-led Combined Task Force 151 (CTF 151), visited the guided-missile frigate Xiangtan of the 23rd Chinese naval escort taskforce in Djibouti on May 17, local time.

The Chinese guided-missile frigate Xiangtan currently stops at the Port of Djibouti for replenishment.

Sr. Capt Wang Hongli, commanding officer of the Chinese naval escort taskforce and deputy chief of staff of the PLA Navy's East China Sea Fleet, held talks with the visiting CTF 151 commander. Both sides had friendly communication on carrying out in-depth exchange and cooperation between the Chinese escort taskforce and the CTF 151 in the Gulf of Aden and waters off Somalia.

Both sides briefed each other on their escort strength composition, escort operation patterns and anti-piracy tactics.

The U.S.-led CTF 151 was set up in January 2009 and now conducts anti-piracy and merchant ship escort missions in the Gulf of Aden and waters off Somalia.
