China, Afghanistan vow to enhance anti-terrorism cooperation

URUMQI, Aug. 2 (ChinaMil) -- General Fang Fenghui, member of China's Central Military Commission (CMC) and chief of the Joint Staff Department under the CMC, met with General Shahim, chief of General Staff of the Afghan National Army on Tuesday.

Gen. Shahim is in China to attend the Inaugural High Level Military Leaders' Meeting on Quadrilateral Cooperation and Coordination Mechanism in Counter Terrorism by Afghanistan-China-Pakistan-Tajikistan Armed Forces.

Gen. Fang noted that the series of important consensuses reached by Chinese President Xi Jinping and Afghan President Ashraf Ghani have pointed out directions for the development of bilateral state and military relations between the two countries. Building the "quadrilateral mechanism" is a strategic step to implement those consensuses, Fang added.

Terrorism is the common enemy of all humankind and all parties of anti-terrorism should make joint and resolute efforts to fight against it, Fang said. He told his Afghan counterpart that the Chinese military is willing to work with Afghan military to intensify strategic communication, deepen cooperation under the "quadrilateral mechanism" framework, enhance anti-terrorism capability and jointly maintain regional peace and stability.

Shahim expressed his gratitude to Chinese people and military for their support to Afghanistan's anti-terrorism efforts. Shahim said joint efforts are necessary in coping with terrorist threats, Afghanistan supports the "quadrilateral mechanism" proposed by China and hopes all parties can play a constructive role in the framework to push forward anti-terrorism cooperation in the region.

Admiral Sun Jianguo, deputy chief of the Joint Staff Department under the CMC, and Afghanistan Ambassador to China Janan Mosazai were present at the meeting.
