Top state executives visited the World War II memorial grounds at Skopje cemetery as well as the graves of the presidents Boris Trajkovski and Kiro Gligorov, local media reported.
State representatives laid wreaths at the memorial as well as at the grave of the General Mihajlo Apostoski, who led the Macedonian guerrilla units during World War II.

Army Day in Macedonia is celebrated on Aug. 18 every year. The holiday commemorates the creation of the Mirce Acev battalion in 1943. The battalion laid the foundation of the People's Liberation Army of Macedonia that fought against the Axis forces during WWII.
