BEIJING, July 14 (ChinaMil) – The commissioning ceremony of the guided-missile destroyer Yinchuan (DDG 175), which was independently designed and manufactured by China, was held at a military port in Sanya, Hainan Province, on July 12, marking that it officially joined the PLA Navy.
In the future, the destroyer Yinchuan is likely to join the battle group with the latest domestic aircraft carrier, Liang Fang, military expert with the Department of Strategic Studies of the National Defense University (NDU) of the PLA, said in an interview.
The destroyer Yinchuan is a member of China’s 052D-class guided missile destroyers.
According to reports, Yinchuan’s hull number is "175". It is the fourth ship of the new generation of guided-missile destroyers after Kunming(DDG 172), Changsha(DDG 173) and Hefei(DDG 174). As China's most advanced active missile destroyer, Yinchuan is equipped with multiple independently developed new weapons and equipment.
The destroyer has a high degree of information level and good stealth performance. It can be used alone or synergistically with other naval forces to attack enemy surface ships and submarines. It also has strong air defense, anti-submarine and maritime combat capabilities.
Liang Fang introduced that the destroyer Yinchuan is a member of China’s 052D-class guided missile destroyers and its performance has been improved substantially compared with 052C-class destroyers.
The destroyer Yinchuan has strong comprehensive combat capability and open-sea combat capabilities. It can serve as the fleet commanding ship in open sea combat because of its complete information command system.
The ship is equipped with vertical launch system to achieve multiple missile launch and this greatly improves the ability to respond to multiple targets. The phased array radar on the ship can simultaneously track or guide multiple targets. In addition, the ship is also equipped with anti-submarine missiles with longer range and higher precision for precision strikes.
"In the future, the warship is likely to join the aircraft carrier battle group with China’s domestic aircraft carrier, which is under construction at the moment." Liang Fang said.
Liang introduced that 052D-class destroyers are important and they are the main destroyers before the development of 10,000 DWT level destroyers. If the 052D-class destroyers join the battle group, they will bear major tasks such as regional air defense.
The destroyer Yinchuan will face strategic pressure from other countries.
The official website of Commander of U.S. 7th Fleet said on June 18 that Stennis and Reagan nuclear-powered aircraft carrier combat groups formed a dual-aircraft carrier strike group in the waters off the Philippines and conducted military exercises on the same day.
At the end of June, The U.S. Navy also revealed that it sent three Aegis destroyers to the South China Sea for early warning and surveillance activities.
Liang Fang noted that the situation in the South China Sea continues to heat up and all forces are in fierce competitions. The commission of the destroyer Yinchuan at this time is clear to the world that China has the determination and ability to safeguard its sovereignty in the South China Sea.
Liang Fang said that the increasingly tense situation in the South China Sea is caused by the so-called "freedom of navigation" conducted by the U.S. in the South China Sea as well as the strategic containment of China by U.S. and its allies. Actions of the U.S. resulted in the escalating "militarization" in the South China Sea.
Under such circumstances, if China has no strong military power in the South China Sea, it will get caught off guard once a war breaks out.
The destroyer Yinchuan is an important tool to safeguard China’s national sovereignty and maritime rights, and it will play a major role in safeguarding China's sovereignty and maritime rights and interests in the South China Sea.
The destroyer Yinchuan will perform normalized cruise in the waters around China, and this will create a strong strategic deterrence to related countries.
"In the future, the South China Sea will usher in a new round of game between major powers. The destroyer Yinchuan will directly face strategic pressures from many countries in the beginning," said Liang.
