Veterans engaged in disaster relief

PLA Daily 2003-11-18

In the site of combating the earthquake and carrying out relief work, a team of veterans, who were about to leave away and return to their hometown, were fighting against calamity. In stead of being bothered about their future after being demo
bilized, they devoted themselves to the missions of disaster relief.

Chen Lianji, a third grade NCO who has filled in the demobilization form, had already bought ticket to go home. However, in the early morning when he was about to leave, earthquake happened in his stationed area. He returned the ticket unhesitatingly and rushed to the disaster-stricken area with his comrades-in-arms. When they arrived at the badly hit area Ciyuan Township of Ludian County, together with another three comrades-in-arms, Cheng formed a shock team promptly and plunged into the work of rescuing the victims one by one, evacuating the masses and delivering materials. They fought for nearly 20 hours without stop and rescued 12 injured people and saved a great number of materials. Out of gratefulness, the mass of the disaster-stricken area honored them as benefactors.

Du Jiawu, political commissar of the Zhaotong Military Sub-Command, who was on spot to conduct the evacuation of the mass at Shouwang Township of Zhaoyang Prefecture, told the reporter, "with the reform and readjustment of the military forces, this year there are more demobilized officers and men than before. When the disaster happened, all the officers and men who will be demobilized rushed to the disaster area to take on the most dangerous and heavy tasks, which is the best demonstration of the fine style of the veterans."
