China and UN: “strong partners”

PLA Daily 2004-10-18

History witnessed a great turn in 1971: The UN General Assembly passed Resolution No. 2758, eventually reinstating the People’s Republic of China her legitimate right in the UN. For over 30 years ever since, China, as one of the founding members of the UN and permanent members of the
UN Security Council, has made unceasing efforts and contributions in strengthening the role of the UN, maintaining the international order and boosting the development of the world.

The UN Secretary General Kofi Annan visited China recently. On the eve of his visit to China, he made the following remarks to journalists: As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China is obviously playing a more and more important role in the international organization of the UN. Moreover, China is increasingly playing a bigger role in the development of the global economy. “The impact of the robust economic development of China on the world can be seen everywhere. During his visit to China, Mr. Kofi Annan expressed his special appreciation to the Chinese government for the contributions China has made to the UN peacekeeping operations.

Secretary General Kofi Annan used the term of “strong partnership” to describe the relationship between China and the UN. This is reflected in the following aspects:

---The Chinese military has been constantly jacking up its efforts and dimensions of participation in UN peacekeeping operations. China has, hitherto, participated in over 13 of the 56 peace-keeping operations sponsored by the UN and dispatched about 2,500 person/times of military personnel and about 220 person/times of civil policemen for peace-keeping.

---China has been taking an active part in international minesweeping operations. The Chinese government put nearly US$5 million in international minesweeping aid and cooperation in 2002 and 2003. China has also joined the “mine action support team”.

----China has energetically devoted herself to international anti-terrorism cooperation. So far, China has joined 10 and signed one of the 12 international anti-terrorism conventions.

----China supports the appropriate and necessary reforms of the Security Council and has participated in related discussions with a positive and pragmatic approach.

----Many social and economic development items of the UN are closely linked with China.

----China has earnestly participated in the maritime affairs of the UN, boosted inter-country and regional cooperation on maritime affairs, fulfilled her obligations with a no-nonsense approach and made positive contributions in global maritime development and protection.
