IT application should be stressed in building of logistics support units

PLA Daily 2004-12-22

In order to enhance quick-response capability of logistics support units in future information warfare, it is necessary to plan and employ various logistics support power in a careful way, and efforts should be made to intensify visualization building of logistics support units so as
to enable them to keep pace with the transformation of combat troops.

Visualization, as a major means to realize “precise logistics support” in the future hi-tech warfare, is a key task for logistics imformationization of our army. By integrating logistics power with information system, it can provides commanders, professional logistics management departments and related users with accurate and timely information on total assets, such as information concerning personnel of units, equipment and materials, so as to enable commanders at various levels and the related departments to follow up the “information flow”, “material flow” and “personnel flow” throughout the whole process, and command and control their distribution and transposition.

At present IT application in logistics can be implemented in a phased and gradual manner by proceeding from data visualization to whole-course visualization. Firstly, efforts should be made to build system application support software and build visualization data platforms such as various specialized database, comprehensive combat logistics database, decision-making data analysis, etc., so as to build a data platform for visualization on the basis of the low-level platform made up of communication network and command automation system. Secondly, on the basis of the existing comprehensive management platform of depots, efforts shall be focused on building the system for automatic identification, collection, processing and transmission of material information to ensure the collection, processing and transmission of source information. Last but not the least, efforts should be made to improve comprehensive information processing system of commanders and the organs, and establish central database and application platforms for combat readiness on-duty, comprehensive information enquiry and decision-making assistance.
