Last week the Chinese and the U.S. naval forces staged the first-ever joint
maritime search-and-rescue exercise, and China and Tajikistan held the first
joint counter-terrorism exercise.
The military exercise is a kind of test staged to check the military
training level. Frequent exercises, especially the multi-national joint
exercises, held in the world in recent years are an embodiment of ever
increasing importance the countries the world over attaching to the military
exercises. How to look at the military exercises from the world's perspective?
And, what enlightenment can we get from these exercises? A couple of days ago
the officers and men of the Langfang Military Sub-Command had an informal
discussion on this topic:
Chang Yuchun (staff officer of the Political Department): On September 20,
the Chinese and the U.S. naval forces held the first-ever joint maritime
search-and-rescue exercise in the San Diego waters. Before this, the two navies
also held a communication and mobility exercise in the Hawaii waters. These
exercises are the concrete actions taken to implement the agreement reached by
the heads of state of China and the United States and their military leaders,
and they also reflects further development of the Sino-US military relations.
Liu Yongcheng (staff officer of the Headquarters): The countries in the
world nowadays attach great importance to setting exercise subjects and
scenarios in light of actual war conditions, and do their level best to overcome
the tendency of "doing exercise for show " or "doing exercise in order to cope
with examinations." Only by carrying out training and doing exercises in line
with the requirements of the actual combat, can the troops act calmly and in an
orderly way in wartime, just as they do in their training and exercises in
peacetime.
Wang Peilu (staff officer of the People's Armed Forces Department) The
joint anti-terrorism exercise code-named "Coordination 2006" held by China and
Tajikistan recently on Tajikistan territory, and the joint anti-terrorism
exercises held before within the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation
Organization have shown the determination of the relevant countries in cracking
down on terrorism and safeguarding the regional stability. There is one thing in
common for the joint exercises participated in by China: these exercises are not
directed against any third party.
