Integrated innovation: an important way for leapfrog development of armaments

english.chinamil.com.cn 2006-11-28

It only took the Chinese military as short as a few years to develop its own plateau-type engineering machinery from scratch, and better still, its comprehensive performance has secured it a place in ranks of the world advanced countries. The interviews with experts who participated in the research project were dominated by one common voice: Success stems from succession, development and integrated innovation.

Integrated innovation stands for effective integration of the existing resources and then gets an integral whole bigger than simply putting together the ingredients, or, in other words, makes "1+1" bigger than 2.

To some extent, integrated innovation has more advantages. In modern technological development, the integrated innovation of related technologies and the competitive leading edge generated as a result will more often than not outshine the importance of the breakthrough of a single technology. The same holds true for the military armament field. Each piece of complex equipment contains numerous single technologies. If innovation is made item by item, the consumption of time and wealth will cause a nightmare. And yet, comprehensive integration opens the way for pooling the most cutting-edge technologies to obtain the maximum effect in the shortest possible time through scientific and effective organization and management.
