The PLA Outstanding Sports Award Appraisal 2006, an event sponsored by the
PLA Daily, unveiled the results yesterday. The PLA Athletes, coaches and sports
teams who gave stellar performances at fierce domestic and overseas sports
competitions in 2006 were awarded.
Xiao Qin, a member of the Chinese men's gymnastics team winning the
championship of the team event at the Asian Games, championship of pommel horse
at the World Gymnastics Tournament and championship at the Gymnastic World Cup
Final, won the top sportsman prize. Zhang Wenxiu, who broke the Asian record and
won the championship at women's hammer throw at the Asian Games, was awarded the
top sportswoman prize.
The August 1 Military Pentathlon Team, with its men's squad carrying off
the title at the 53rd World Military Pentathlon Championship to win the top
prize for 11 times in a row and its women's squad taking gold award at the 53rd
World Military Pentathlon Championship to win the championship for 6 times in a
row, was honored with the title of the best sports team. The August 1 Men's
Basketball Team won the outstanding contribution award for the vital role it had
played for the Chinese Men's Basketball Team to regain the title at the Asian
Games.
