Sentry posts on snow-capped mountains have steady supply of fresh vegetables

english.chinamil.com.cn 2007-02-15

Early morning on Feb.13, soldiers of a vegetable base of a frontier defense regiment under the Xinjiang Military Area Command were busy sorting out and boxing up over 10 different vegetables, such as cucumbers, tomatoes and hot peppers, etc. they harvested from their vegetable base, and were preparing to deliver them to the officers and men of the sentry posts as the special supply vegetables for the Lunar New Year holiday. These vegetables, grown by organic farming, are unpolluted by chemical fertilizers or pesticide.

The frontline companies of this regiment all station on the top of the Karakorum Mountains, and the officers and men could hardly have fresh vegetables all the year round in the past. In 2002, this regiment built 12 greenhouses in the depth of the Karakorum Mountains as a vegetable base, which covers an area of 10 mu. This base can now produce over 20 tons of fresh vegetables annually. Through establishment of a military-civilian coordination mechanism, this regiment has, through the outsourcing contract, arranged the "special delivery vehicle". If necessary, the officers and men of the sentry posts need only to pick up their telephone to place an order, the local company will deliver the vegetables to the sentry posts within the shortest possible time.
