english.chinamil.com.cn 2007-02-25

JAKARTA, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia will hold a sub-regional conference on counter-terrorism at foreign ministerial level on March 5-6 in Jakarta, Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Desra Percaya said here on Saturday.

The conference would be held at the proposal of Indonesian Foreign Minister Hassan Wirayuda and his Australian counterpart Alexander Downer, and therefore it would be co-chaired by both ministers, Antara news agency quoted the spokesman as saying.

The conference was scheduled to be attended by the foreign ministers of Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines and Singapore's senior minister.

Desra said the conference would be a follow-up to a Regional Ministerial Meeting on Counter-Terrorism held in Bali in February 2004 which was attended by ministers from 20 Southeast Asian and Pacific countries.

Meanwhile, Ansyaad Mbai of the anti-terrorism desk of the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs said over the weekend that the government was exploring the possibility of cooperating with a number of Muslim countries to reduce radicalism and terrorism.

"We are exploring the possibility of cooperating with a number of countries such as Kuwait, Jordan and Saudi Arabia to reduce radicalism and terrorism," Ansyaad said.

He said the anti-terrorism program which was already being carried out in a number of countries including Europe and the United States was intended to clarify the real meaning of Islam, especially in regard to the concept of jihad (holy war).
