Liang Guanglie, member of the Central Military Commission and chief of
general staff of the PLA, met with N. M. Dube, chief of staff of the Zimbabwean
Defense Forces, and the delegation led by him yesterday in Beijing.
Liang Guanglie said that the friendship between China and Zimbabwe and
between their two peoples has a long history. Since the establishment of
diplomatic relations between the two countries, fruitful cooperation has been
achieved in various fields. China appreciates Zimbabwe's adherence to the
one-China policy and its consistent support to China in international affairs
such as on the human rights issue. Liang noted that the Chinese army attaches
great importance to its friendship with the Zimbabwean Defense Forces and is
willing to further develop mutual cooperation in various fields between the two
militaries.
Liang also briefed his guests on China's national defense and the army
modernization drive.
Dube said that the friendship between China and Zimbabwe could trace back
to the era when the Zimbabwean people were still struggling for national
liberation. The Zimbabwean government and people are grateful to the Chinese
friends for their long-term support and assistance. He reiterated that the
Zimbabwean side would continue to stick to the one-China policy and is willing
to work together with the Chinese side to lift the friendly and cooperative ties
between the two countries and two militaries to a new level.
