Liang Guanglie, member of the Central Military Commission and chief of
general staff of the PLA, held talks with Lt. Gen. Zdravko Ponos, the visiting
chief of general staff of the Serbian Armed Forces yesterday in Beijing.
Liang said that Serbia is China's trustworthy friends and partners. The
relationship between the two militaries is an important part of the relations
between the two countries, to further develop the friendly cooperation between
the two militaries is not only in the fundamental interests of the peoples of
the two countries, but also conducive to the peace and stability in the region
and even the world as a whole. The Chinese side is willing to work together with
the Serbian side to further promote multi-level and wide-range development of
the relations between the two militaries.
Liang Guanglie also briefed his guests on China's national defense policy
and the army building.
Zdravko Ponos said that the relations between the Serbian and Chinese armed
forces have been developing very well in recent years, as evidenced by
beneficial cooperation in the military education, military medical sciences and
other fields. The Serbian side hoped to further strengthen its exchanges with
the Chinese army in the future. He also reiterated that the Serbian government
would firmly stick to the one-China policy.
Before the talks, Liang Guanglie held a welcome ceremony for Zdravko Ponos.
Zdravko Ponos and his party arrived in Beijing on June 18 to begin his
six-day official visit to China at the invitation of Liang Guanglie.
