MOSCOW, March 18 (Xinhua) -- Talks between Russian and U.S. top diplomats
and defense ministers have failed to reach compromise on U.S. plans to deploy
missile shield components in Central Europe, a proposal rejected by Moscow.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Tuesday that the United
States reaffirmed its intention to build a missile shield in Central Europe
after the one-day 2-plus-2 talks in Moscow that involved his U.S. counterpart
Condoleezza Rice and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates.
Rice told a press conference after the talks that the United States thought
about some proposals on the missile shield and is looking forward experts'
opinions and Moscow's reply.
The U.S.-Russian relations are "complex" and proceeding in a way marked by
cooperation and difference that can be talked with each other, she said.
The two sides also discussed arms control treaties and pledged to further
bilateral ties.
