Fashionable elements on military campus

english.chinamil.com.cn 2008-09-04

Form a questionnaire on cultural activities on school campus, students of the Missile College of the Air Force Engineering University found out that the students' most popular cultural activities in daily life are to write blog articles, make web pages and play on-line games.

"As an important part of social culture, the military school campus culture cannot be isolated from society, and the cultural shock from society is unavoidable. Especially for generations born in 1980s and 1990s, they are active in mind and sensitive to new things. Thus novel and fashionable elements are easier to be in vogue among them," said Jiang, a political instructor of the students company, and his attitude towards fashionable elements reflects the opinions of most cadres.

Fashionable elements have indeed brought fresh air into this college. Through these activities, students have broadened their horizons, learned diversified skills, improved their writing ability, and enhanced their computer skill. Having broken away from the dull old-fashioned cultural life, their after-class activities have now become rich and colorful.

There is no denying that fashionable elements have had some adverse impact on teaching activities and school management. For instance, a student became learning-weary, as he was addicted to rock music. Later, through efforts from various quarters, he corrected his erroneous ideas.

Some students held that only by becoming proficient in a particular field, could they be able to come to the fore in the army. As a result, they devoted too much effort to cultivate their personal skills, such as making web pages and creating flashes, and neglected their own specialties.

Zhou Chuangming, a person in charge of the network management center, said: "Along with popularization of webblog and QQ space, and personal online diary, it is now more difficult to guard against secret leakage on line."

On the question of fashionable campus culture, this college adopts the attitude of guiding the students to carry out discussion on fashionable culture entering military school campus, so as to enhance their ability to distinguish the good from the bad and consciously reject "grey" and "pornographic." cultures.

In order to make campus cultural activities more colorful, the college provides special study and training facilities for students so as to enable them to give full play to their strong points. The college holds web page design competition and flash making competition every year, and organizes rock bands to give performances during holidays and send students to take part in Web Page Design Competition sponsored by Xi'an City. Zhao Tianlin, director of the Political Department of the College told the reporters, "So long as we can guide students to deal with fashionable elements correctly, we can surely make contributions to building a harmonious school campus."
