Xu Caihou, vice chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC), met on
March 18 in Beijing with a delegation of social workers from Hong Kong (HK)
headed by Mrs. Betty Tung, wife of the CPPCC Vice Chairman Tung Chee-hwa.
Xu Caihou said that with the aim of serving Hong Kong and requiting China,
the organization set up by Mrs. Betty Tung had been concentrating its efforts on
charity cause, and playing a helpful role in improving morals of HK teenagers,
pushing forward the work of city greening and environmental protection in HK,
taking care of and helping the HK female and the disadvantaged group, and
promoting the solidarity between the army and the people in Hong Kong.
Xu pointed out that the organization had contributed a lot to the people in
disaster-stricken areas and the troops in disaster relief during the fighting
against the Wenchuan earthquake in 2008, which has deeply encouraged the
officers and men at that moment.
Xu Caihou also expressed gratitude on behalf of the PLA officers and men to
the government and all circles of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region for
their great concern for and support to the PLA garrison troops in HK.
Xu hopes all circles of HK to care about and support the building of the
PLA garrison troops in HK as always, and supervise and urge the PLA HK Garrison
to accomplish its missions well.
Mrs. Betty Tung briefed the achievement made by the military summer camp,
which was jointly held by her organization and the PLA HK Garrison, and
expressed that her organization would remain committed to the public welfare
undertaking, and would try to make new contributions to pushing forward the
social development and maintaining a prosperous and stable Hong Kong.
