PYONGYANG, Jan. 4 (Xinhuanet) -- The Democratic People's Republic of
Korea (DPRK) on Sunday accused the United States of having an ulterior
motive behind its calls for dialogue and negotiation in dealing with the
nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula.
The Minju Jason, a major DPRK newspaper, said the United States was
sending into South Korea a large amount of various sophisticated combat
equipment.
Though the United States was talking a lot about dialogue and
negotiation, "it is the US ulterior intention to seek a military solution
to the nuclear issue between the DPRK and the United States as it did in
Afghanistan and Iraq," the newspaper, run by the DPRK cabinet and the
Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly, said in a signed
commentary.
The United States was re-deploying its main forces in South Korea,
including its 2nd Infantry Division, to areas south to the Han River, and
was working hard to turn the forces into a "Northeast Asian regional
force" targeted at the DPRK and countries around the Korean Peninsula in
the future, said the commentary.
"The US policy to stifle the DPRK based on its military pressure or
threat would only push the situation to a catastrophic phase," the
commentary warned, adding that the DPRK will take all possible measures
for self-defense.
The US call for "resumption of the six-way talks" was nothing but
hypocrisy and trick to cover up its intention to swallow up the DPRK by
force, it added.
Although no important breakthrough was made in the first round of
six-party nuclear talks, which involves China, the DPRK, Japan,Russia,
South Korea and the United States, in August 2003, all participants agreed
to continue the multilateral negotiations.
The DPRK has expressed its willingness to hold a next round talks.
