The Second and Third Field Armies of the PLA launched the Yang tze-Crossing Campaign on the early morning of April 21, 1949; they swiftly broke through the defensive line of the Kuomintang troops along the Yangtze River and liberated Nanjing, Shanghai and most areas in Jiangsu, Anhui, Zhejiang and Jiangxi provinces.
