At 16:30 on January 5, a Boeing 747 aircraft touched down on the
Taoxian Airport in Shenyang City, and China’s first batch of peacekeeping
engineer group returned home with honor after successfully accomplished
its peacekeeping mission in Liberia.
The peacekeeping engineer group was set up on November 20, 2003, and
arrived in Liberia on April 7, 2004, where 274 officers and men of the
group were divided into three teams to undertake rush repair tasks of
roads and bridges on three trunk highways in Liberia. During their 9-month
stint in Liberia, they overcame numerous difficulties such as language
barriers and sweltering weather, etc., and had successfully rush repaired
585 km of highways, built 127 km of road in muddy areas, built three steel
bridges and 18 wooden bridges, providing strong support for the smooth
implementation of the UN disarmament plan and humanitarian assistance in
Liberia.
Thanks to their outstanding performance, the UN official
awarded them “UN Honorary Medals ” in recognition of their excellent
contributions.
