BEIJING, March 2 (Xinhuanet) -- The
anti-secession law aims partially at curbing secessionist activities conducted
by the force for "Taiwan independence" and will greatly help promoting
cross-Strait relations, said a spokesman for the upcoming session of the Tenth
National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference
(CPPCC) Wednesday afternoon.
Spokesman Wu Jianmin made the remarks
at a press conference in Beijing while answering questions raised by a Taiwan
journalist.
"Everybody longs for peace and
stability but activities of the force for 'Taiwan independence' threatened
regional peace and stability," said Wu.
Wu also quoted the remarks made by Jia Qinglin, chairman of theCPPCC
National Committee, on Jan. 28 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Jiang Zemin's speech on
Taiwan issues made on January 30, 1995.
According to Jia, the anti-secession
law will help promote the development of cross-Straits relations and peaceful
reunification, maintain China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, oppose
andcurb any secessionist activities as well as maintain peace and stability in
the Taiwan Straits.
"It is a law in compliance with the
fundamental interests of the Chinese nation on the whole," Jia noted.
"Chairman Jia's remarks clearly
represented the CPPCC National Committee's views on the anti-seccesion law, of
which the legislation procedures has been set in motion," said Wu.
The allegation that the
anti-secession law will damage cross-Straits relations is "groundless", the
spokesman said.
