CPPCC members Wu Runzhong, Li Lianghui, Wang Yongguo, Zhao Yingfu, Guo Yuxiang and Guo Dongya spoke at the joint meeting. By focusing on the Government Work Report and combining with the actual reality of the national defence and military modernization, they shared their views and raised suggestions on building a socialist harmonious society, and further strengthening the education and management of medium-and-senior level cadres and the building of a contingent of NCOs.

　　Xu Caihou said that the preparation for military struggle and the army modernization had reached a critical point and many major issues needed to be solved by pooling the wisdom of the entire army. All the comrades should carefully study and implement Jiang Zemin's thinking on national defense and army building and bring their strong points into play, study and reflect on major issues and contribute ideas to national defense and army building according to the missions and requirements Chairman Hu set out for the army in the new century and new period. Military interests and rights and interests of the officers and men should be energetically maintained and protected, making it possible for the entire society to learn more about, pay attention to and support the national defense and army building.
