Overseas Chinese in New York hail KMT leader's mainland trip

NEW YORK, May 5 (Xinhuanet) -- The Global Chinese Alliance for the Unification of China on Wednesday hailed Chinese Kuomintang (KMT) Party Chairman Lien Chan's mainland trip and called on the Taiwan authorities to abandon "Taiwan Independence" and return to the stand of one China.

Dr. John C. Chen, chairman of the Global Chinese Alliance for the Unification of China, said that overseas Chinese should unite and do their part to contribute to the peaceful unification of China.

Overseas Chinese should also make it clear to the US government and people that peaceful unification of China will benefit not only China but also world peace at large, Chen said.

The alliance will hold a conference in Washington in September over cross-Straits issue, he added.

James Chieh Hsiung, Professor of Politics at New York University, said that the majority of the Taiwan compatriots favor Lien's tour and support the peaceful unification of China.

He said that the Taiwan people, through Lien's mainland tour, saw for themselves the prosperity of the mainland and won't be deceived again by reports full of bias against the Chinese mainland.

He noted that Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian should abandon the pro-independence stance.

Fang Yan, a politics critic, said that the people across the Straits hope for peace and the Taiwan authorities should follow the trend of history and Taiwanese opinions and return to the stand of one China.
