
On 11th June of 1938, Wuhan battle started. The
picture shows the Chinese troops are blocking the Japanese troops' attack.

Japanese troops.
From June to October 1938, The Chinese troops waged a battle against the
Japanese troops in Wuhan area and it was the largest battle waged by the Chinese
troops since the start of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. The
battlefields were in the periphery of Wuhan city along the south and north banks
of the Yangtze River and involved large areas of Anhui, Hebei, Jiangxi and Hubei
Provinces.
From June to the end of October, the troops of the National
Government put up a series of heroic defensive operations to defend Wuhan
against the Japanese attack. In this campaign, the Chinese Air Force shot down
62 Japanese aircraft, destroyed 16 Japanese aircraft, and sank 23 Japanese
warships, giving effective support to the Chinese troops fighting on the
ground.
The Japanese troops attacking Wuhan from various directions
suffered heavy losses, and it was not until the end of October were they able to
complete their encirclement of Wuhan from three directions.
On 25th
October, the Chinese troops withdrew from Wuhan area of its own accord, thus the
campaign to defend Wuhan was brought to an end.
The battle to defend
Wuhan lasted for four months and a half, inflicting some 40,000 casualties on
the Japanese troops. The end of Wuhan Campaign marked the beginning of the
strategic stalemate in the War of Resistance Against Japanese
Aggression.
