From June to October 1938, The Chinese troops waged a battle against the Japanese troops in Wuhan area and it was the largest battle waged by the Chinese troops since the start of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. The battlefields were in the periphery of Wuhan city along the south and north banks of the Yangtze River and involved large areas of Anhui, Hebei, Jiangxi and Hubei Provinces.

From June to the end of October, the troops of the National Government put up a series of heroic defensive operations to defend Wuhan against the Japanese attack. In this campaign, the Chinese Air Force shot down 62 Japanese aircraft, destroyed 16 Japanese aircraft, and sank 23 Japanese warships, giving effective support to the Chinese troops fighting on the ground.

The Japanese troops attacking Wuhan from various directions suffered heavy losses, and it was not until the end of October were they able to complete their encirclement of Wuhan from three directions.

On 25th October, the Chinese troops withdrew from Wuhan area of its own accord, thus the campaign to defend Wuhan was brought to an end.

The battle to defend Wuhan lasted for four months and a half, inflicting some 40,000 casualties on the Japanese troops. The end of Wuhan Campaign marked the beginning of the strategic stalemate in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression.
