The Weinan and Linnan Campaigns

PLA Daily 2005-08-01

The 8th Sub-Command of the Taihang Command of the Eighth Route Army held a meeting to oppose capitulation and civil war.

In July 1943, in order to recover and consolidate the anti-Japanese revolutionary bases, the Hebei-Shandong-Henan Military Area Command and the Taihang Military Area Command launched the Weinan Campaign and the Linnan Campaign successively under the unified command of the headquarters of the Eighth Route Army.

Starting from July 31, the Hebei-Shandong-Henan Military Area Command launched the storming raid and long-range raid against the 7th Division, the 1st Independent Brigade and 2nd Independent Brigade of the puppet troops, at the same time, a general attack was also launched against the corps headquarters of the puppet troops at Dafanzhuang. In this campaign, the Eight Route Army wiped out 5,600 puppet troops and recovered the Weinan area.

On the eve of the conclusion of the Weinan Campaign, the 129th Division of the Eighth Route Army followed up the victory to launch the Linnan Campaign with partial strength of the Taihang Military Area Command and the South Hebei Military Command. In this campaign, they annihilated the main force of the 24th Group Army of the puppet troops led Pang Bingxun and Sun Dianying which entrenched in the southern Taihang Mountain area to the west of the Beiping-Hankou Railway.

The Linnan Campaign started at 0:30 am on August 18, and by 12:00 am the following day, all the puppet troops in the city were wiped out while the Japanese troops were besieged at Toudaoying. Starting from August 20, the Eighth Route Army exploited the military victory to press on, and recovered Dongyaoji, Lijiachang, Hebiji, Hejian, Yuankang and other places. Afterwards, it repulsed the attack by over 1,400 Japanese reinforcing troops at Anyang and Huixian.

In the Linnan Campaign, the Eighth Route Army annihilated over 7,000 Japanese and puppet troops, shot down one Japanese aircraft and captured some 80 enemy strongholds; the Eighth Route Army took 790 casualties.

The victory of the Weinan Campaign and the Linnan Campaign marked the beginning of transition from strategic stalemate period to strategic counter-offensive period in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, and these campaigns had created favorable conditions for our troops and people to recover and develop the anti-Japanese revolutionary bases and had strengthened the confidence of the Chinese troops and people in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression.
