JAKARTA, Aug. 1 (Xinhuanet) -- An international exhibition will be held on
Aug. 3-7 as part of the celebrations to mark the 600th anniversary of voyage of
Admiral Zheng He in Semarang, the capital of Central Java province.
Malaysia, Singapore, the People's Republic of China, China's Hong Kong
Special Administrative Region, Sri Lanka and Japan will take part in the
exhibition, said the exhibition's coordinator Benita Arijani from the Capung
Organizer.
"The exhibition is scheduled to be officially opened by Minister of Trade
Mari E. Pangestu on Wednesday. Perhaps, long-term deals might be struck during
the event," the Jakarta Post quoted Benita as saying.
Various foreign and domestic products will be exhibited, ranging from
household to industrial products.
Over 225 exhibition stands have been prepared in the Central Java Trade and
Promotion Center (PRPP), reserved for foreign companies as well as participants
from 32 provinces around the country.
The promoter will also organize arts performances, such as a nasyid
(Islamic acappela singing) contest, a bonsai exhibition, and a display of
ancient artifacts connected with Admiral Zheng He.
The promoter estimates that up to 100,000 people will visit the exhibition.
Sindu Dharmali, the chairman of the Zheng He 600th anniversary organizing
committee, disclosed that the preparations for the event are 95 percent
complete.
Central Java Governor Mardiyanto has also said that his office will provide
full support for the event, the preparations for which have been underway for
the past two years.
The year 2005 marks the 600th anniversary of the first voyage of Zheng He,
who led huge fleets of Chinese merchant ships on seven major expeditions from
1405 to 1433, establishing mutually beneficial trade and diplomatic relations
with over 30 Asian and African countries and regions.
