In October 1937, based on the notes he took during the interviews in the
Soviet Area of the Red Army, American journalist Edgar Snow wrote and published
the book "Red Star over China", through which the Long March of the Chinese
Workers' and Peasants' Red Army was made known to the world for the first time.
In this book, Edgar Snow, through reliable and vivid accounts, showcased the
lofty spirit and great image of the Communist Party of China who made hard and
bitter struggles and heroic sacrifices for the national liberation, and broke
down the rumor offensive to distort and vilify the Communist Party of China.
Snow arrived at the Northern Shaanxi Revolutionary Base Area in June 1936
after going through many hardships. In the Northern Shaanxi Soviet Area, Snow
interviewed revolutionary leaders, generals of the Red Army as well as ordinary
soldiers. In late October 1936, Snow returned to Beiping with over ten copies of
diaries and notes and 30 rolls of film, and he was determined to "use these
materials to make an open, objective and unbiased report on what he had seen,
heard and learned in the past days."
When the book "Red Star over China" was brought out, it produced extensive
and sensational influence in the world. Soon it was translated into more than 10
languages and became one of the best sellers in the world. In 1939,when Snow
revisited the Northern Shaanxi Revolutionary Base Area, Ma Zedong called him an
old friend of the Chinese people and praised "Red Star over China" as one of the
most successful book to report on the Chinese revolution by foreigners.
