The Memorial Hall of the Forced
Crossing of the Dadu River by the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army
In early May 1935, after crossing the Jinsha River at the Jiaopingdu
Ferry in Yunan Province during the Long March, the Central Red Army continued to
advance northward and make preparations to cross the Dadu River before it headed
for northwestern Sichuan.
The Dadu River, a main branch of the Minjiang River winding through the
high mountains, is 300 meters wide with roaring rapids. On the evening of May
24, the advanced detachment of the Central Red Army--- the 1st
Regiment of the 1st Division---conducted a forced march of over 80
kilometers before it arrived at the Anshunchang on the right bank of the Dadu
River, where it put to rout two companies of the Sichuan Local Army, captured
the Anshunchang and found a wooden boat in the vicinity of the ferry.
On the morning of May 25, Liu Bocheng and Nie Rongzhen went to the forward
position to direct the battle in person. Sun Jixian, commander of the
1st Battalion of the 1st Regiment of the Central Red Army,
selected 17 warriors from the 2nd Company to form a shock team to
cross the river, which paddled the boat against rapids under the enemy roaring
guns and flying bullets. The shock team swiftly crossed river. With the support
of the firepower from the right bank, the shock team fought valiantly to beat
back the counterattack by the Sichuan Local Army and controlled the ferry.
Afterwards, the 1st Division and the Cadre Regiment of the 1st Army Group of the
Central Red Army crossed the Dadu River, which had been regarded by the
Kuomintang as an impassable natural barrier.
