The battle site of the forced crossing of the Wujiang River by
the Red Army
On January 1, 1935, the Central Committee of the CPC decided at Houchang to
establish a new Sichuan-Guizhou Soviet Base Area. When the 2nd
Division of the 1st Army Group reached the southern bank of the
Wujiang River, its advance guard - the 4th Regiment---was pressing on
towards the Jiehe ferry of the Wujiang River in an attempt to seize the ferry
and cross the river there.
On January 2, the main force of the 1st Army Group and the
9th Army Group of the Red Army Right Column put to rout the
8th Regiment of the Guizhou Local Army at the Huilongchang Ferry near
Qingkou of Yuqing County, and then crossed the Wujiang River.
At 9:00 am, January 3, the Red Army launched fierce assault from the
Jiangjie River and defeated the 5th and the 6th Regiments
headed by Lin Xiusheng of the 3rd Brigade of the Guizhou Local Army
which garrisoned the river and then successfully crossed the Wujiang River. The
Cadre Regiment and the Field Engineer Company laid the floating bridge across
the river at the ferry, and then the Column of the Military Commission and the
5th Army Group of the Red Army crossed the Wujiang River.
On January 7, the Red Army captured Zunyi City, which gave the Red Army
precious time for rest and consolidation and created a good condition for the
Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the CPC to hold the meeting there.
