River Campaign by the Red Army in the Long March
In the middle of November 1934, the Central Red Army, which had
successfully broken through the enemy's three blockades, entered Jiahe, Lanshan
and Linwu areas in Southern Hunan. Meanwhile, in order to impose the fourth
blockade against the CCentral Red Army, Chiang Kai-shek deployed large number of
troops between Lingling and Xing'an on both sides of the Xiangjiang River along
a 150 km line.
On November 27, the advanced detachment of the First Army Group of the Red
Army reached Jieshou and seized the ferry without firing a shot.
On November 29, the enemy launched an attack against the Red Army at the
ferries. The Red Army soldiers on both sides of the river put up a stubborn
fight against heavy odds in order to cover the Central Committee of the CPC to
cross the river safely.
On December 1, the battle reached its height, and the numerous Red Army
officers and men laid down their lives in the battle, but the ferries remained
in the hands of the Red Army. By 17:00 on that day, the central leading organs
and the main force of the Red Army had successfully crossed the Xiangjiang River
after a desperate fight.
By then, the Red Army had broken through the fourth blockade, but it had
suffered heavy losses. The number of troops of the two columns under the Central
Red Army and the Central Military Commission had reduced sharply from 86,000
troops at departure time to 30,000.
