British scholar and China expert Dick Wilson published in 1971 "The Long
March 1935: The Epic of Chinese Communism's Survival", the first English
monograph devoted exclusively to the study of the Long March. In this book, Dick
Wilson narrated and interpreted in an "encyclopaedic" way the Long March of the
Chinese Workers and Peasants' Red Army from historic, legendary and symbolic
perspectives.
Dick Wilson stressed repeatedly in his book that, "The Long March is the
important spiritual wealth of the Chinese people". Meanwhile, he also regarded
the Long March as the paradigm of the human spirit, saying that, "The Long March
has become a kind of symbol for people all over the world, the mankind can
definitely reach their goals so long as they have determination and
perseverance."
Dick Wilson is the first western scholar who studied the history of the
Long March of the Red Army systematically in combination with China's reality.
His narration and in-depth analysis of the Long March in this book can be rated
as a classic on history. That is a way till today that many scholars doing
research on the Long March at home and abroad are still quoting copiously from
this book for reference.
