The above piece of work is a "Bulletin of the Chinese Workers' and
Peasants' Red Army" collected by the PLA Archives. What makes it so
extraordinary is that it is the earliest to use the term "Long March".
The well-known Long March of the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army
didn't use the term Long March at the very beginning. The destination the
Central Red Army targeted when it kicked off the march was to join forces with
the 2nd and 6th Army Groups based in Hunan and west Hubei provinces and then
fought back from there so as to smash the "encirclement and suppression"
campaign launched by the Kuomintang troops and to recover the Soviet areas.
Therefore, the terms used then were "long-distance march and fight",
"expedition" and "moving away". In the orders and directives issued by the
Central Revolutionary Military Commission and the headquarters of the Red Army,
it was called "west expedition" and "breaking through the encirclement".
In May 1935, the Central Red Army arrived at Mianning Yi ethnic area in
Daliangshan Mountain. The "Bulletin of the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red
Army" released in the name of the Commander-in-Chief of the Red Army Zhu De
read, "… On 10,000 li Long March is the Red Army, smashing on its way
all resistance; arrived at now is west Sichuan Province, promising to respect
the ethnic customs." When addressing the rally to celebrate the establishment of
the Revolutionary Committee of Mianning County, Zhu De mentioned Long March once
again. The above-mentioned bulletin and speech were convinced so far to be the
earliest to use the term Long March.
The "Resolution of the Central Committee of the CPC on the Political
Situation and Mission after Joining Forces of the 1st and 4th Front Armies"
adopted at the Shawo Meeting held by the Political Bureau of the Central
Committee of the CPC on August 5, 1935 stated clearly that "The Long March is an
unprecedented great cause in the Chinese history." This is the first time to use
the term "Long March" formally in the paper of the Central Committee of the CPC.
