Taking the Presidential Palace (oil painting)
From April 20 to 21, 1949, the 2nd and 3rd
Field Armies of the PLA launched the Crossing-Yangtze-River Campaign along an
over-500km-long battle line stretching from Hukou in the west to Jiangyin in the
east. The two field armies broke through and destroyed the defense of the
Kuonintang troops and the Crossing-Yangtze-River Campaign got a great victory.
On the evening of April 23, Nanjing, the center of the Kuomintang reactionary
regime, was liberated. The painting represents the PLA soldiers raising a red
flag on the top of the Presidential Palace, declaring the end of the
22-year-long reactionary governance of Kuomintang.
