Great Victory at Pingxingguan Pass (part
of oil painting)
On the early morning of September 25, 1937, the No. 115 Division of the
Eighth Route Army laid ambush on both sides of the highway at the northeast
direction of the Pingxingguan Pass to attack two units of the 21st
Brigade of the Japanese Fifth Division (the Itagaki Division). In this battle,
the Eighth Route Army wiped out over 1,000 Japanese troops, destroyed some 100
trucks and 200 horse carts, captured some 1,000 rifles, 20 machineguns, one
piece of artillery and large amount of military materials. This was the first
great victory won by the Chinese armed forces since the start of the nationwide
War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression. The great victory at Pingxingguan
Pass broke up the myth that the Japanese army was unconquerable and greatly
inspired the morale of Chinese army and civilians.
