The historical moment arrived at about 11:00 a.m. of March 31, 2008, when
the Olympic flame was escorted smoothly to the Tian'anmen Square from the
Capital International Airport, throwing the people of all circles participating
in the welcome ceremony at the Tian'anmen Square immediately into a sea of
enthusiasm.
Drums beating, gongs clanging… The heart-stirring sound of the
beating gongs and drums aroused the crowd at the square to high feather. One
child shouted loudly: "Mom, look! How impressive the gong and drum team is!" A
foreign friend came up to Cheng Qinghua, a drummer, and gave him the thumbs-up.
Five days ago, the No. 15th Detachment of the Armed Police Beijing
Contingent received the notice from the Beijing Organization Committee for the
2008 Olympic Games (BOCOG) asking the former to take on the responsibility of
doing the on-site gong and drum performance at the welcome ceremony of Olympic
flame and the ceremony for kicking off the relay of the Olympic torch. In
response to the requirement for undertaking this honorable and arduous duty, the
detachment selected 100 first-rate quality officers and men to make up a
performance team the same day. Arduous was the task and pressing was the time,
and yet, not a single one of them ever complained of hardship and fatigue.
The fabulous performance is the pay-off of their industrious efforts. When
the performance was wrapped up successfully, Ding Baizhi, leader of the Mass
Event Organization Group of the BOCOG, said, "The performance is superb!" The
on-site director of the event shook the members' hands and said, "Your
performance is wonderful and makes one of the shining points of the event. I
would like to thank you on behalf of the BOCOG."
