At the invitation of the headquarters of UN Interim Force in Lebanon, the
fourth batch of the Chinese peacekeeping engineer detachment which took over
from the third batch of the Chinese peacekeepers one week ago participated in a
military drill codenamed western "beacon", sponsored by the western area troops
of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon. The drill is set under a hypothetical
background that the overall security situation in the mission area of the UN
Interim Force in Lebanon deteriorated, as a result the air, sea and land traffic
was restricted and the safety of the UN civil staff was directly threatened. The
Chinese peacekeeping engineering detachment was required to receive the UN civil
staff and their family dependants, transfer them to safer areas and provide them
with accommodation, medical care, food and water, etc.
"Perfect!" heartily claimed Yos, a senior official in charge of civil
security affairs in the western headquarters of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon,
and senior officer Martin who came together with 8 assessment officials, in a
meeting-room of the Chinese peacekeeping engineer detachment at 3:00 p.m. on
July 2, after they watched the three-hour drill held in the Chinese barracks
along the shore of the Mediterranean Sea, and Yos told Li Yuanxiang, commander
of the Chinese peacekeeping engineer detachment: "The Chinese detachment is very
rich in experience, the drill is very realistic and its response is very swift
and it has set a good example for us!"
