After a long-distance march in the tropical jungles for more than 10 hours,
40 officers and men of the fourth batch of the Chinese peacekeeping engineer
group to Sudan arrived at the Rumbek-based barracks of the UN Special Mission in
Sudan, completing the first branching deployment.
According to relevant stipulations, the Chinese peacekeeping engineers to
Sudan must have the capability of making branching deployment and offering
supports to multiple mission locations at the same time.
To ensure the safety of the servicemen and vehicles while carrying out
branching deployment, the headquarters of the war theater sent out escort troops
and assigned the minesweeping units to mark the route to each sub-location with
bounds that allows no overstepping. Vehicles can only roll on and stop for
breaks within the space of 4 meters off the central line of the route. Given
that situation, the Chinese engineer group selected skillful drivers, worked out
preplans in case of setting off a mine or encountering conflicts. In addition,
the officers and men were organized to conduct special training to handle the
situation. Thanks to all the preparation work, they eventually drove through
mine fields and crossed obstacles in a breathtaking, highly nervous and
combat-ready atmosphere, and neutralized all dangers on the way to reach the
designated location without much trouble.
According to the order from the headquarters of the war theater, the
branching deployment of the Chinese peacekeeping engineer group will last for
two months to shoulder the tasks of road building, lifting and erecting
engineering, airport maintenance, fortress building and assisting the
community-that should be undertaken by the UN Mission in the Sudan.
