BEIJING, May 13 (ChinaMil) -- The PLA Navy's guided missile frigates Linyi and Weifang and some Russian Navy's warships left the port of Novorossiysk in Russia for the designated area in the Mediterranean Sea at 17:00 on May 12 to participate in a joint military exercise, according to the PLA Navy's official micro-blog account .
The micro-blog account said that the PLA Navy's comprehensive supply ship Weishanhu has arrived at the exercise area to standby. Earlier, China and Russia have completed the preparatory work for joint operations including a plan deduction.
According to Vice Admiral Du Jingchen, deputy commander of the PLA Navy and general director of the Chinese side in the joint exercise, the theme of the exercise is to safeguard ocean shipping safety. The 11-day exercise are divided into four stages.
May 11 to 12 is the preparation stage of the joint action and the main task is deduction on the organizational chart in the headquarters of the joint exercise. From the evening of May 12 to 17, the participating troops of China and Russia will leave Novorossiysk for the Mediterranean Sea. The ocean shipping safety safeguard stage is scheduled between May 18 and 21 and the troops will conduct drills including maritime defense, maritime resupply, escort operations, joint action to safeguard shipping safety and actual use of weapons. On the evening of May 21, the exercise cluster will be dismissed and the exercise will come to an end.
The PLA Navy sent guided missile frigates Linyi and Weifang, supply ship Weishanhu to participate in the joint exercise. The Russian Navy sent five warships and one tug ship.
Yin Zhuo, a military expert, said in an interview with CCTV that the warships participating in the China-Russian joint military exercise are all major warships, indicating the high-level mutual trusts between China and Russia. The exercise area is far from the Chinese mainland, which is a new challenge for the Chinese navy.
