China and the US have achieved a number of breakthroughs in military cooperation since announcing a new model of bilateral relations.
The two countries carried out multiple anti-piracy and anti-terrorism exercises. In 2014, China participated in the US, Thailand-led Cobra Gold military drill. In the same year, then US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel visited China, in an effort to encourage greater military ties.
In 2013, Chinese Defense Minister Chang Wanquan visited the US with the aim of building mutual trust. The two countries also engaged in a series of army, navy dialogues in the past two year.
