China, US open channels for military trust

(Source: CCTV.com)   2015-06-14

As Fan Changlong continues his visit to the United States, Chinese military experts say new communication channels are expected to be set up to help prevent military confrontations.

This is the first top-level Chinese military leaders' visit to the United States since 2012.

Military experts say China and the United States have sought more military exchanges and cooperation in recent years.

They have had high-level contacts, dialogue and consultations, and joint exercises and training.

Last year, for the first time, China took part in the US-led "Rim of the Pacific" military drills.

Also last year, China and the US signed two Memoranda of Understanding, on a mutual notification mechanism in major military activities, and the rules of behavior for safety of air and maritime encounters. "Unexpected incidents between two armies in recent years are all dangerous air and maritime encounters. With the conduct, these risks could be greatly reduced. The signing of the two Memorandum of Understanding made a historic step in building up mutual trust for the two countries and the two armies," said senior colonel Zhao Xiaozhuo, China Academy of Military Sciences.

The expert says this trend will help promote healthy and stable bilateral military ties, and it is in the strategic interests of both sides.

Despite disagreements, China and the United States are heading towards a positive direction in military exchanges and cooperation.
