Chinese peacekeeping detachments to Lebanon hold hand-over ceremony

  BEIRUT, January 21 (ChinaMil) -- The 11th and 12th Chinese peacekeeping engineer detachments to Lebanon held a hand-over ceremony on the morning of January 20, 2014 at their barracks in a village in south Lebanon.

  General Patrick Phelan, deputy commander of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), reviewed the 11th Chinese peacekeeping force to Lebanon. Afterwards, Phelan took over the UN flag from Nie Xuezheng, commander of the 11th Chinese peacekeeping force to Lebanon and head of the 11th Chinese peacekeeping engineer detachment to Lebanon, and handed it over to Tang Bing, commander of the 12th Chinese peacekeeping force to Lebanon and head of the 12th Chinese peacekeeping engineer detachment to Lebanon.

  In his speech, Phelan said that facing the complicated situation in Lebanon, the Chinese peacekeeping officers and men have completed such tasks as clearing mines along the Blue Line, building boundary stakes, constructing defense works, maintaining projects, and offering medical services and humanitarian assistance in the past 10-odd months, making outstanding contributions to peace and stability in south Lebanon.

  Since its deployment in March 2013, the 11th Chinese peacekeeping force to Lebanon has opened up, cleared and enclosed 4,172-square-meter minefield lanes of 17 task points, removed 142 anti-personnel mines, rechecked and enclosed the lanes of 4 task points, built 13 stakes along the Blue Line and repaired 31 enclosures. The medical detachment has treated a total of 3,100-plus patients, performed 72 operations, transferred 48 patients and increased the beds in the emergency room from 3 to 5.

  All the 335 officers and men of the 11th Chinese peacekeeping force to Lebanon won the UN Peace Medal of Honor.
