The guided-missile frigate Yueyang, assigned to a destroyer flotilla with the South China Sea Fleet of the PLA Navy, received the distress signal from a fishing boat whose hull number was Yue Taishan No. 62268 at 17:00 on that day.
At that moment, the frigate was performing missions in a sea area in the South China Sea, However, Wang Wenwu, commander of the frigate Yueyang and vice chief of staff of the destroyer flotilla, ordered the frigate to go to the incident area immediately.
According to Chen Yaozhuan, captain of the fishing boat, the fishing boat was caught in heavy storm waves a few days ago. The king tower of the refrigeration house onboard fell off and damaged the refrigeration pipe of the freezing pump, which disabled the refrigeration house. The food onboard begun to spoil, the communication equipment and satellite phones were all damaged. Moreover, one crew member was seriously injured, the captain added.
