BERBERA, Somalia, May 24 (ChinaMil) -- Escorted by the frigate Xiangtan of the 23rd Chinese naval escort taskforce, a merchant ship named Evangelia L serving for the UN World Food Programme (WFP) arrived at the waters near the Port of Berbera in Somalia at about 09:00 on May 23, local time, after a continuous navigation for nearly 10 hours.
The Evangelia L, loaded with more than 35,000 tons of sorghum, departed from the Port of Corpus Christi in Texas of the U.S. for Somalia. But due to change of schedule, it sent an imminent escort application to the 23rd Chinese naval escort taskforce. The frigate Xiangtan met the merchant ship in the waters near Djibouti and then escorted it for Somalia.
During the escort, the frigate Xiangtan kept regular communication with the Evangelia L to get the updated information and strengthened lookout and guard against suspected targets so as to ensure the safety of the escorted ship.
This is the first time for the 23rd Chinese naval escort taskforce and the ninth time for the Chinese naval escort taskforces to escort the WFP ships carrying humanitarian supplies, said Wang Hongli, commanding officer of the 23rd Chinese naval escort taskforce.
