BRUSSELS, June 24 (Xinhua) -- In his response to Britons voting to withdraw from the European Union (EU) on Thursday, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Friday said the United Kingdom would retain its position in NATO despite the change in the EU's political landscape.
"The British people have decided to leave the European Union," he said in a statement. "As it defines the next chapter in its relationship with the EU, I know that the UK's position in NATO will remain unchanged."
He stressed the UK would still be a strong and committed NATO ally, and would continue to play its leading role in the alliance.
"Today, as we face more instability and uncertainty, NATO is more important than ever as a platform for cooperation among European allies, and between Europe and North America," said Stoltenberg.
He added NATO was committed to closer cooperation with the European Union.
