Armed police troops rush to tornado-stricken counties for disaster relief

YANCHENG, June 24 (ChinaMil) -- Funing and Sheyang, two counties of eastern China's Jiangsu province jolted by a deadly tornado and hailstorms at around 14:00 on June 23. A total of 98 people were killed and about 846 people sustained injuries, 200 of whom were seriously wounded, local rescue headquarters said on Friday.

In addition, more than 8,600 houses, two elementary schools and eight factory buildings were damaged in the counties of Funing and Sheyang, and parts of Yancheng City, according to a Xinhua report on Friday.

About one hour after the deadly tornado raid, 50 armed policemen from an armed police detachment stationed in Yancheng City rushed to a seriously damaged town for rescue. They cleared road obstacles and searched from household to household for trapped people. Over 40 people have been evacuated and transferred to safe places.

As of 23:30, 881 firefighters from 12 cities of Jiangsu including Nanjing, Suzhou and Wuxi have arrived in the two tornado-jolted counties to carry out search and rescue operation overnight.

About 300 armed police troops set out from Taizhou and Huai'an at 23:00 and arrived in Funing in the wee hours of June 24 to join the search and rescue efforts.

At present, the armed policemen have rescued 160 injured people and resettled more than 700 residents whose houses had been damaged in the disaster.
